Young people doing organic farming

Many young people have embarked on starting businesses and building production farms following the direction of organic agriculture. However, besides some startups finding the path to success, many young people also encounter failure.

Many young people have embarked on starting businesses and building production farms following the direction of organic agriculture. However, besides some startups finding the path to success, many young people also encounter failure.
Four “golden rules”

In the past 5 years, organic agricultural production has become a startup trend for young people. However, even among the young people themselves who are starting businesses, their access to organic agricultural production is still very vague.

The Workshop to discuss organic agricultural production for young people was held at ECO G9 AGRICULTURE Cooperative. Some people said that organic agricultural farming method simply does not use chemicals such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides. plant protection... in production to keep products clean and safe. This understanding is not comprehensive because it does not clearly understand the conditions for production. In addition to the factor of not using chemicals, young people also have confusion between organic agricultural production methods and clean, safe agricultural production methods; because in clean agricultural production processes chemicals are still used at a reasonable dose, within the allowable standard range without affecting the environment.

To meet organic agricultural production, producers need to master four basic principles (according to expert Bui Hong Quan).

Health principles. For this principle, the objects that need attention in the health group are: soil, crops, livestock, and people. Because if you do not pay attention and take good care of the soil, crops and livestock, it will affect product quality, reduce nutritional value, and harbor pathogens. From substandard products becoming the food we use to prepare food, it will also affect human health.
The ecological principle is to ensure ecological balance by designing a simulated and sustainable natural system in the land area that people use for cultivation and agricultural production. This is considered a principle that helps farmers take advantage of natural enemies to overcome and prevent pests and diseases for plants, and preserve diverse biological resources.
The principle of justice shows respect and equality for all living things. Because every organism, when it appears in the natural environment, has a role and contribution to balancing the natural ecosystem. If in the process of agricultural production, losing fairness damages the balance of the natural ecosystem in general and the simulated natural ecosystem in particular that we are building, leading to negative consequences. Organic agricultural production will not have durability or longevity in terms of time.
Principle of care: During the production process, if we only focus on profits and do not care about protecting the environment, as well as protecting the health of the community, when providing dirty agricultural products, agricultural products Poor quality will affect a future generation.

Starting an organic farming business is not easy

Many young people today have chosen agriculture as a career path. However, this job is not simply hoeing grass or growing vegetables, but requires knowledge of proper agriculture and decent agricultural production. Besides some young people with passion and using the knowledge they have learned to develop stable and sustainable agriculture, there are also many young people doing organic agriculture following the movement.

Young people starting organic agriculture now have many advantages because they can look to their predecessors to learn from experience. The organic agriculture ecosystem is also gradually forming from input materials, consulting support to evaluating international organic certification. Currently, many organizations have set up representative offices in Vietnam. However, the difficulties and challenges when choosing to start a business with organic agriculture are still many.

The market is the first factor. According to the survey, out of more than 90 million Vietnamese people, up to 70% do not have access to organic food, the remaining 30% are researching and only 1% are willing to buy organic food. Furthermore, products of clean and safe agricultural production methods are currently widely deployed in all localities across the country. These products have a slightly higher price, but with the current income of workers, it is still acceptable. Meanwhile, products of organic farming methods have a selling price 3-4 times higher than the market price.

Besides, when choosing the path of organic farming, young farmers need to have persistence and perseverance for a period of at least 5-10 years. To have a farm with an annual income and a well-known brand, the farm must go through a journey of organic farming full of thorns and challenges.

Almost witnessing 90% of agricultural startups lead to failure. “There are many people who quit their office jobs to work in the garden, but the end result is that they leave all their accumulated money, go to the forum to say goodbye and then return to Saigon to look for a job. Sincere advice for agricultural startups is to only invest on your own land, not on rented land, which is very risky. On the other hand, you must invest and equip yourself with knowledge, gain experience as well as be persistent in your work, avoid working on the sidelines, only then can starting a business lead to success. especially in NNHC". The conclusion for the golden rule of starting an organic farming business for young people is that we should not rush to follow the "Leave the city to return to the countryside" movement, but should ask ourselves why we don't choose both.
